| Hello and welcome to the second season
of Corbin’s Ride On. In this episode we’ll kick-start
the season with Dennis Gage at the Granddaddy of all motorcycle
rallies—Bike Week in Daytona, Florida. Although the
weather was a little wet, no one’s spirits were dampened
and there were plenty of great bikes, awesome parties, and
fantastic entertainment! You’ll also see some wild outfits
and free spirits in all their glory, plus you’ll get
a first hand look at some of the events that this legendary
rally is known for, but before we get into all that, here
is a brief history on the event itself.
Bike Week has been a tradition in Daytona since 1937, and
it was during that year the inaugural running of the Daytona
200 took place; however, bikers have been coming to this place
of fun in the sun since 1904, and has the attendance ever
grown! For example, in 1947 there were 176 riders present,
but this year the folks here expect more than 500,000 riders
to be cruisin’ the streets! There is no doubt that during
this time of year that Volusia County, Florida, is turned
into the center of the motorcycle universe.
Corbin’s Ride On special correspondent, Dennis Gage
was on hand to bring us all the details of this ten-day celebration!
No one really seemed to mind the wet weather that was taking
place because everyone was primed to ride, party, and share
their experiences about what they all had in common: motorcycles!
There were trikes, sport bikes, dressers, customs, and cruisers.
There were modern bikes, vintage bikes, and everything imaginable—in
fact, there was even a homemade “mini-chopper”
and Dennis couldn’t pass up the opportunity to speak
to the bike’s creator. The owner said that he was inspired
by legendary bike-builder Jesse James and he created this
bike for his son. After some friends suggested that he start
building them for others he took them to heart and now he
does just that! Powered by an eight-horsepower Tecumseh motor,
this little dude will reach 50 miles per hour. It’s
street legal too with all the lights in the right places.
He said that he makes the bikes for folks ages 14 and up—what
a cool ride!
Another great aspect of Bike Week is that enthusiasts can
demo ride all the newest models and makes. There were displays
by Victory, Indian, Ducati, BMW, and of course, Harley-Davidson.
Speaking of Harleys…you could not imagine the Harley
turnout—it was like a rolling museum! There were also
an incredible number of vendors who had the latest accessories
for your bike and the apparel that would enable every rider
to display true his or her own individualism! Speaking of
clothes, perhaps the only thing that was wilder than the bikes
themselves were the outfits worn by some of the participants.
There was everybody in attendance from a Viking Warrior to
Santa Claus! It is also interesting to note that the number
of female riders also continues to grow with each passing
year. Naturally there were a host of parties during the week
and everyone had to visit such landmarks as the Boot Hill
Saloon—oh yeah, and by the way, there was a pretty nice
beach to hang out at too!
As always, Bike Week was a once in a lifetime experience
and if you love bikes and like having a good time then this
is the rally for you. If you would like more information on
this year’s event, or if you want to know about next
year’s rally, give them a look on the web at www.officialbikeweek.com.
Until our next ride, “Keep the shiny side up and Ride
On!”
