Track Day - Written by Keith Fudge

Just imagine you and your sport bike in a controlled environment testing your own limits as well as those of your machine. No speed limits except your own, and no oncoming traffic. Sounds too good to be true, doesn’t it? Well, that fantasy can quickly become a reality if you participate in a Sport Bike Tracktime.com event. Recently, Brian Jackson and the Corbin’s Ride On crew traveled to Northwest Florida and the Jennings GP track to see just what goes on at one of these events.

After he arrived, Brian caught up with Sport Track Time owner Monte Lutz who told Brian that these events are held all across the country. Then he gave Brian the lowdown on just how each event is conducted. First of all, once the rider arrives with all the correct protective gear and with his or her bike set up properly, then track professionals assign each rider to one of three classes: novice, intermediate, or advanced. Then, each group goes through a series of lectures and receives personalized instruction from racing professionals and instructors, and with a student to teacher ratio of 4:1 it is easy to see that everyone receives plenty of one-on-one attention. Lessons can be as simple as being told, “Don’t panic—don’t slam on the brakes,” but Monte went on to tell that one of the main advantages that riders gain from this type of experience is that they discover that what is learned on the track can be applied to riding on the street

Monte also said that the primary purpose is that these weekends give riders the opportunity to come out and ride in a non-threatening and safe environment, and that they can have a great time camping, meeting new friends or reacquainting themselves with old ones, and eating some fantastic food! Other riders such as Bridgette Reece told us that she had recently had an accident and this weekend was helping her to restore her confidence for riding. Then there was Pamela Kelmer who had brought her Honda Interceptor to the track and learned just what she and her bike could do, improving her personal best with each run. Finally, participants in this event were especially lucky for this event was Aprilia Track Day and Aprilia Motorcycles were available for demo rides so that riders could experience the feel and performance of these great machines. Monte told us that Aprilia was the only manufacturer to offer demo rides at these events and after Pamela Kelmer took an Aprilia for a test drive she proudly proclaimed, “I’m in love!”

These events offer an incredible opportunity for fun and the chance to become a better and safer rider. You can’t ask for more than that. One thing is for sure, everyone who attends has the opportunity to have a great time and meet some fantastic friends!
