British & European Classic - Written by Keith Fudge

Last May, Brian Jackson and the crew from Corbin's Ride On had the good fortune to attend British and European Classic Motorcycle Day in Germantown, Maryland. Started in 1983, this year's event was held on the beautiful grounds of Butler's Orchard. This show had just about something for everyone; however, one thing that everyone had in common was a love for vintage European motorcycles. While he was there, Brian spoke with Bill Ford, Vice-President of Classic Motorcycle Day, Inc., who told him that the show had been primarily for British motorcycles when it began in 1983, but since there was not an organized show for European bikes at that time, they decided to open up this event for makes from other countries. Consequently, the bikes registered for this event are as diverse as their countries of origin. Just a few of the non-British makes were BMW, Zundap, Puch, Bultaco, and Ducati; however, the event was still more populated with British bikes such as Norton, Triumph, BSA, and others.

Bill went on to say that they expected 200 bikes for the day's event and that many more folks would be on the grounds for some of the other attractions such as a fabulous swap meet where riders might be able to find that obscure part that they have been searching for! Bill also said that there were plenty of vendors, and that the food for the event was great! There was also a concours show, door prizes, and a play area for children-like we said, something for everyone! Brian also spoke with Rae Tyson, President of the Patomic Vintage Riders, who told him about one of the more unique events of the day: a vintage trials demonstration! Concerning the development of trials riding, Rae told Brian that as roads got better, and that bikes could then make it easier from one place to another, trials riding became a popular way to test and push the abilities of the riders!

Finally, Brian got to speak with some of the rallyists and hear what they thought about their bikes and the event. First, he ran into "Jersey" Joe Lewczak, the proud owner of a 1928 Ariel Model A. Joe told Brian that this was his third trip to the event and that his hobby has simply gotten in his blood. Next, Brian ran onto Michael Dukeman and his 1933 Moto Guzzi Type II VT. Michael told Brian that new paint and replating were basically the only things that had been done to restore this 500cc, OHV bike. Mike also added that although he had ridden the bike throughout Europe, that this was his first ride in the United States and added that everything was going well. Brian also ran into Joe and Amanda Esposito who told him that this was their eleventh trip to the rally!

All in all, the 2004 British & European Motorcycle Day was a great success. Next year's event will be held on May 22. If you would like more information on this year's event, or would like to see what's in store for next year, give them a visit on the web at That's it from Maryland, so remember, "keep the shiny side up and Ride On!"
