What's New in Trikes - Written by Keith Fudge

In the world of motorcycling, one of the fastest growing areas is that of custom trike conversions, better known as “trikes.” One of the best known conversion companies in the industry is Motor Trike, Incorporated, located in Troup, Texas. Recently, Brian Jackson had the opportunity to accompany owners Jeff and Diane Vey, who along with a talented and dedicated staff, continue to set industry standards in three-wheel design and quality. In their opening conversation, Jeff told Brian about the recent growth that the company has experienced. “In two years we went from two employees to 52, and we went from a facility of 1,800 square feet to one that will soon be approximately 75,000 to 80,000 square feet.” Diane cited that much of the company’s recent growth is attributed to the fact that more and more trikes are now seen on the road. She also noted that rider comfort is an issue, especially since the passenger has more freedom on a trike in terms of being able to move and change positions. Jeff also said that in addition to the comfort factor, there is an added degree of safety that allows riders to ride without worry!

Much of that comfort and freedom from worry have to do with the technology and quality that sets Motor Trike apart from the competition. According to the company’s website, “All Motor Trike kits are manufactured using our Air Ride Suspension (patent pending) as standard equipment. The comfort and stability of the Air Ride Suspension will give you a ride that is unsurpassed in the industry. Our product is unique in that our ride quality and handling characteristics split the difference between the traditional solid axle design and the independent rear suspension being offered today” (http://www.motortrike.com/mtTechnicalData.aspx). Jeff also said that another factor in the company’s success is their two definitions of quality. First, there is customer service. Jeff simply stated that you get ahead by treating people the way that you want to be treated. Second, you simply overbuild. In other words, give customers a better product than they expect.

So, what’s new at Motor Trike these days? Well, while they continue to come up with more conversion packages, such as one for the Harley-Davidson V-Rod, there is another product that is generating a good deal of excitement and attention: a cool new turnkey trike built on the Honda 750 Shadow. Diane states that this bike is a perfect and affordable beginning for women who want their own trikes. Okay, so now you are sold on the notion of a three-wheeler, so you may want to ask, “Where do I get a Motor Trike conversion or trike?” Well, that’s simple because there are more than 150 dealers nationwide that handle the Motor Trike product line. Better yet, you could even take a trip to Troup, Texas for a factory tour! To sum it all up, Jeff obviously believes that enjoyment is the key, as he says, “We’re in the toy business. Toys are good.” We couldn’t agree more.
