| It's always a great experience to visit with one of the custom motorcycle industry's "idea guys." In this segment, we had the chance to visit with seat guru, Mike Corbin, about what's new at Corbin Industries. The answer is a new product with an old name. Say hello to the new and improved Corbin Rumble Seat! The Corbin Rumble Seat for motorcycles borrows much from the original fold-down concept used in automobiles several years ago. However, on a motorcycle it is a shared designed of form and function that allows it to be successful for the motorcyclist.
The objective of the Corbin Rumble Seat was to turn a solo saddle into a two-up seat with a backrest. According to Mike, it was an effort to combine cosmetic appeal and functionally. Regarding the functionality, it was a given that the flip-up backrest must be strong. This process was accomplished by having nickel-plated steel literally buried into the molding of the seat. Brass bushings were then used to ensure a smooth fit and strength. The spring index hinge that serves to anchor the backrest was tested and retested over an extended period of time to make sure the seat stayed down for solo riders and held up while passengers used it. Screw-down panels that can also be painted to match the bike cover the hinge mechanism. This feature enhances the cosmetic appeal as well. Getting back to the shared concept of form and function, Mike stated it is an essential part of a designer's work. In the case of the Rumble Seat, Mike said, "it must work and make the bike look good." Now you can go from solo seating to a two-up seat with a flip of a hinge! But wait, there's more than meets the eye. First of all, there is a key lock system, so the entire seat can be removed with the turn of a key. For those of you who like to stay warm when riding in cool weather, the Corbin Rumble Seat has its own "bun warmer!" That's right - the Rumble Seat comes in a heated version, and all wiring and adapters are included for this simple installation. Finally, Mike talked about the renowned Corbin quality and the construction of the seat. Corbin uses fiberglass made from a half-polyester, half-polyurethane material for strength. Next, Corbin uses a space foam product for its cushions that is literally bonded to the base plate in the mold. Sculpting the seat takes place next where engineers determine the "sweet spot" of the seat in order to provide the maximum comfort and support points for the rider. Finally, the seat is covered in the finest Italian leather. Mike emphasized while at first the seat may seem extra firm, with some riding, it will eventually conform to the rider's body and break in just like a new pair of leather shoes.
You can tell that Mike Corbin has fun with his job. He knows that his products make people happy, and that's what he likes. In closing, he told us the main thing people look for is comfort, and Corbin is the king of comfort. That sounds good and feels good to us.
