EPISODE CRO 11002

In this episode of Corbin’s Ride On…a custom paint crew that’s taking it to the next level…plus, a visit with the Oregon Ogre to Chop It! with Big Mike…and we’re heading to Davenport, IA for the mother of all vintage meets!

AMCA Nationals
The Antique Motorcycle Club of America, or AMCA, holds shows, swap-meets & racing events all year all over the country.  But for three days in early September, Davenport, IA becomes the center of the vintage motorcycle universe as the Chief Blackhawk chapter of the AMCA hosts the Fall Nationals.  Why Davenport?  Like they say in real estate – location, location, location!  In the center of the Midwest, Davenport is equally accessable from just about anywhere.  What keeps vintage bike enthusiasts coming back to Davenport year after year is the heart of the event – a giant swap meet where collectors can find just about anything imaginable for their pet projects.  But Davenport is about more than just looking at old bikes, or even finding rare parts to keep ‘em going – Davenport is about racing!  The grandstands of the Mississippi Valley Fairgrounds were packed with spectators to see a variety of vintage bikes take to the dirt track for an evening of all-out racing.  These machines may be old, but they are definitely NOT slow!

Now, when you hear the term “Hummer” you probably think of a giant SUV or a presidential aid wearing knee-pads.  But at this meet a Hummer   is a Harley-Davidson model from the ‘50s that was anything but big.  The idea behind the Hummer – a light, single-cylinder bike that originally sold for under $300 – was to attract younger riders who couldn’t afford a big bike, in hopes that, as their spending power grew, they’d invest in more expensive models.  This meet featured the most complete collection of Harley ummers anywhere.

One enthusiast who was able to complete a project at Davenport was Jay Zanetti, who’s been working for years restoring a vintage Indian.  He finally found the correct speedometer!  Lots of vintage restorers choose the AMCA Fall National Meet in Davenport, IA as the place to debut their completed projects.  Dale Walksler came to Davenport from Maggie Valley, NC with his gorgeous restored vintage Harley.  Jay & Dale are living examples of just how important the Davenport swap meet is to the antique motorcycle community, and why the AMCA Fall Nationals are an antique motorcycle enthusiast’s dream come true – thousands of vintage bikes, hundreds of thousands of rare or obsolete parts & pieces – truly a walk through the history of motorcycles.

Airea 5150
Scott Daugherty loves motorcycles.  & he loves motorcycles that look good.  He’s been improving the paint job on everything he could get his hands on since he was a kid.  In 1999, Scott started his current paint shop, Airea 5150, allowing him & his talented crew to focus on custom paint for motorcycles.  & the crew at Airea 5150 is committed to the highest standards of quality.

Getting high-quality results starts with using high-quality materials.  Scott is a stickler about using nothing but the best, & for him, that means sticking with House of Color from start to finish.  But anybody can buy a can of paint. Using it like these guys do?  That’s art.

Scott is still hands-on with every phase of production at Airea 5150, & still insistant that the most important person in the shop is the customer.

Chop It with Big Mike
This season of Corbin’s Ride On finds us back in Bend, Oregon at the facilities of Big Mike’s Choppers where Biggie & the boyz have taken on a new project.  Starting with a laundry list of pieces & parts, they’ll be chopping, bending, welding, hammering & wrenching their way to a one-of-a-kind signature custom for the fine folks at Jack Daniels – always good company to be in!  The process starts with design meetings & continues from bare frame to finished motorcycle – with plenty of comic relief from notorious hooligan Big Mike & his incorrigible crew.  You won’t want to miss a minute of the good times – & occasional moments of productivity – that eventually will lead to a really cool custom.  Watch for up-coming episodes of Chop It!  With Big Mike & see the whole process of creating a world-class one-off motorcycle.
