| Everybody knows about collector car auctions,
but did you know that there are classic motorcycle auctions
too? Our friend, Dennis Gage, recently had the chance to attend
the Fifteenth Annual Daytona Antique and Classic Motorcycle
Auction and Meet on the campus of Stetson University in DeLand,
Florida.
The auction was held during one of the biggest motorcycle
celebrations in this country—Bike Week in Daytona, Florida.
J. Wood & Co. Auctioneers and Liquidators handled the
show and Dennis was lucky enough to have Jerry Wood show him
some of the bikes that would be sold at auction. Jerry told
us that there were bikes for sale at this auction ranging
in age from the early 1900s to the present, and boy was he
correct!
The first bike that we saw was a 1909 Indian! This bike
has had the same owner for the past thirty-eight or thirty-nine
years! In fact, it had been in storage in a barn. Next, we
saw a rare bike: a DLM. This is an Australian bike with a
British engine and it was in fantastic condition. Jerry then
showed us a great looking Vincent for sale. These British
bikes were the fastest production motorcycles in the 1950s.
Next, there was a great looking 1974 Norton Commando—complete
with their own Isolastic Suspension to keep down engine vibration.
There were BSAs and BMWs too, including one “Beemer”
with a VW engine in! Finally, there were several vintage Harley-Davidson
motorcycles for auction including an all original and unrestored
1950 Police bike, and a 1968 Electra Glide that was also original
and unrestored. Believe us; if you were looking for it, it
was probably there! Another interesting fact is that many
of these bikes were sold with no reserve, so the highest bid
wins! Pretty cool, huh?
